Paintless dent repair and hail damage
Paintless dent repair, or PDR, pushes a dent out from behind the panel. There is no filler and no repaint, so the factory finish stays original. We use it on hail damage, door dings, and shopping-cart dents for drivers in Mission, Edinburg, McAllen, and the rest of the Rio Grande Valley.
How PDR works
A small dent is metal that got pushed in without breaking the paint. In PDR, the tech reaches behind the panel with long steel rods and picks. Sometimes there is already an opening to work through. Sometimes a trim piece, a taillight, or part of the headliner has to come off first. Then the metal gets worked back out, a little at a time.
The work is done under a light board, so the reflection on the panel shows every high and low spot. When the reflected lines run straight across the panel again, the dent is gone. Nothing gets filled or sprayed, so there is no color to match and no new paint that ages differently from the rest of the car.
Hail in the Valley
When hail hits the Valley, it hits a lot of cars at once. On March 29, 2012, the National Weather Service office in Brownsville said a storm dented hundreds of vehicles across McAllen, Edinburg, and Mission. Storm reports logged golf ball hail in Mission at Fairway and Bryan and on South Shary Road, and at 107 and Ware in Edinburg. The Insurance Council of Texas put insured damage from that storm at $260 million.
It keeps happening. Three weeks later, on April 20, 2012, the public reported baseball size hail in Mission near Palm Drive and 5 Mile Line. On April 21, 2023, Mission had multiple reports from quarter size up to tennis ball size. On May 8, 2025, reports showed golf ball hail southwest of Edinburg and a measured 2-inch stone near Dove and McColl in McAllen. Those dates come from the NOAA Storm Prediction Center report logs.
When PDR works, and when it doesn't
PDR works best when the paint is not broken and there is a way to get a tool behind the dent. Round dents from hail and door dings are the usual fit.
It is the wrong fix when the paint is cracked or chipped, when the metal is stretched or creased hard, or when the dent sits right on a panel edge with no way to reach behind it. Those dents need conventional body work and paint. We do that too, in the same shop. A hail car with a mix of both gets one estimate and one repair plan, with PDR used wherever the panel allows it.
What sets the price
A couple of door dings and a hail-beaten car are very different jobs. Here is what moves the price:
- How many dents there are, and how big
- Where they sit (roof rails and body lines take more work than the middle of a door)
- Whether trim, lights, or the headliner have to come off to reach the back of the panel
- Whether any panel needs conventional repair and paint instead
Hail and your insurance
Hail damage is usually covered under the comprehensive part of an auto policy, not the collision part. If you are not sure you carry comprehensive, check your declarations page or call your agent before you file.
If you do file, the shop is still your choice under Texas Insurance Code § 1952.301. We write the estimate, send it to the adjuster, and keep you updated. Hail can crack a windshield as well as dent the roof. If yours did, the glass is a separate job, and we handle that too.
How a dent repair goes
- 01
Look under the lights
We go over every panel under a light board and mark the dents.
- 02
Written estimate
You get the plan in writing: which dents come out with PDR and which, if any, need body work and paint. On a claim, the estimate goes to your adjuster.
- 03
Work the dents out
We open the access points, push the dents out, and put back anything we removed.
- 04
Final check
We look at every panel under the lights again before you pick up the car.
Frequently asked questions
What is paintless dent repair?
A way to remove dents by pushing the metal back out from behind the panel. No filler and no new paint, so the original factory finish stays on the car.
How much does paintless dent repair cost?
It depends on how many dents there are, how big they are, and where they sit. A single door ding and a roof full of hail are priced very differently. The estimate is free, and you get it in writing.
How long does PDR take?
Less time than traditional body work, because there is no filler to cure and no paint to spray. The dent count decides most of it. We tell you what to expect when we write the estimate.
What dents can't be fixed with PDR?
Dents where the paint is cracked or chipped, metal that is stretched or sharply creased, and dents on a panel edge with no way to get behind them. Those need conventional body work and paint, which we also do.
What are the downsides of PDR?
The main limit is that it doesn't fit every dent. If a panel can't be made straight without filler and paint, we tell you and quote conventional repair for that panel instead.
Is hail damage covered by insurance?
Usually under comprehensive coverage, if your policy has it. Check with your insurer. If you file a claim, you choose the shop, not the insurance company.
Do you fix hail damage for McAllen drivers?
Yes. Our Mission and Edinburg shops are both a short drive from McAllen, and estimates are free at both.
